The Status of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Ethiopia

In recent times, Ethiopia has shown encouraging strides in the expansion of utilizing Information and Communication Technology for multi-purposes.  The country has recognized to play a meaningful role in the knowledge economy and is making significant efforts in the ICT arena.

The economy shows a transfer from agriculture-based to knowledge-based economy and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) government has committed to participate fully in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.  In this sense, the government has given utmost attention to the expansion of ICT, to use it, in a systematic and sustainable manner and one of the activities that is given priority is to extend the Information Technology and to assist the access to the technology.  Of the commitment to the development of the sector the government allocates a huge amount of budget on networking the country, in the sector of the education, health and e-government.

Moreover, the government is making highly efforts to make Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool in its strategies of eradicating poverty.   It has been also considered ICT as a vital aid to solve the poverty issues with the effective application of   the technology.  This is because ICT benefits the poor by providing information that is critical for poverty reduction.

It was with this aims that Ethiopian Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (EICTDA) has been established as an autonomous Federal Government public office having its own juridical personality with the proclamation no. of 360/2003.

EICTDA is also working with the aim of creating an informed and knowledgeable society as well as building a developed nation in line with the governments overall development goals and strategies have formulated various programs. The agency is also making a striving effort with the objectives of guiding the systematic use of ICT as well as enabling accelerated political, social and economic development of the country.
