On Friday 29 August, 2003 the participants at the World InformationTechnology Forum (WITFOR) adopted the Vilnius Declaration, which, on the eve of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS, Geneva, December 2003), deals with the most accute issues with respect to the information society.

The first world IT forum "WITFOR - Vilnius 2003", which lasted three days, has finished.

In the forum Vilnius declaration was adopted, which should become an important tool in developing and economically strengthening countries in choosing priorities of knowledge society development.

The World Information Technology Forum "WITFOR - Vilnius 2003" adopted Vilnius Declaration that might become an important tool for the developing countries and the strengthening economies to define priorities in the information society development process.

Next World Information Technology Forum WITFOR forum will be held in Botswana after two years.

Mayor of the City of Vilnius Artûras Zuokas attended the World Information Technology Forum "WITFOR - Vilnius 2003" and addressed its participants with a presentation in which he introduced the vision of Vilnius as an e-City.


UNESCO Official: Digital Divide may be Turned to Digital Dividends



During the press conference held at "WITFOR - Vilnius 2003", Deputy Director General of UNESCO Abdul Waheed Khan said that the World Information Technology Forum should become an important step forward in the discussions on global information technology development and in the search for ways to make IT accessible to the biggest possible number of people.


Vilnius Declaration will help to define priorities



"Vilnius Declaration is to become a tool for the governments throughout the world to define priority actions that required special attention", says Adviser to Secretary General of UNESCO Henrikas Juškevičius when defining the importance of the main document that is about to be adopted at "WITFOR - Vilnius 2003".

WITFOR - Vilnius 2003 - A significant contribution to information society development



WITFOR - Vilnius 2003, the information technology forum which commenced today, is a world standard preparatory conference to supplement the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva on December 10-12, 2003 on issues of information society development.

"The World Information Technology Forum taking place in Vilnius and the adoption of the Vilnius Declaration during the forum will make a substantial contribution to the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) concerning matters of information society development," stated International Telecommunications Union (ITU) General Secretary Yoshio Utsumi.
